The Chairman of Heirs Holdings, Tony Elumelu, has advised African leaders and development organisations to tackle unemployment with increased focus on electricity and the agricultural sector.
This he said at the Youth Connect Africa Summit in Rwanda. Elumelu, the Founder of Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF), spoke on the theme, “How do we create 10 million jobs in 2020?”
He said that access to electricity and intensified spotlight on the agricultural sector would encourage entrepreneurship thereby reducing unemployment drastically.
Much of expectation is on the private sector to create jobs in Africa citing TEF’s contribution to various investments in important sectors, adding that it is possible for $100 million investment over the years to support African entrepreneurs.
“Today we have businesses in 20 African countries and employ 30,000 people directly and 50,000 people indirectly. Agriculture, access to electricity and entrepreneurship have the potential to create more jobs in Africa,” he added.
Elumelu commended the effort of Rwandan President, Paul Kagame, for his brilliant initiatives in the areas of entrepreneurship and attracting key investments to the African continent.
The Youth Summit hosted by Kagame, had over 2,500 invited guests from both private and public sectors.
